( Narinjara News, 12 September 2014)
The prolonged night curfew, which was imposed in Sittwe, the capital of Arakan, in June 2012 was finallylifted by the Rakhine State authority.
“The situation has improved in the capital city. So the authority has decided to lift the curfew from Sittwe”, said U Win Myint, a spokesperson of Arakan government on Thursday.
Soon after the sectarian violence broke out in Sittwe two years back, the authority imposed the curfew from 11 pm to 4 am every night and it continued till last week.
Of course, the night curfew in Buthidaung, Maungdaw, Thandwe and Kyauk Pru would continue for somemore days as the authority has yet to decide on the fate of these western Burma townships.
The Sittwe authority has already arranged for announcing the news relating to the lifting of curfew from Sittwe through loudspeakers in the vehicles.
U Hla Maung, an ex-teacher informed that the citizens welcome the decision of withdrawing curfew from the capital city.
“All markets in Sittwe were forced to close down by 11 pm always because of the curfew. It almost ruined the businessmen of Sittwe. Now the people can move and shop everywhere without the restriction,” he added.
