“Five Buddha images in Taung Bwe village under Kyauk Taw township were damaged on 11 July. The heads of the Buddhist statues are seen falling on the ground,” said U Soe Nyeint, a lawmaker of Arakan State parliament.
He also accused some Muslim people from Taung Bwe village of committing the crime.
“It must be the handiwork of Bengali Muslims who live in the village nearby the pagoda. I strongly believe that the Buddhists would never do this,” added the lawmaker.
According to a local source, a group of people entered into the pagoda during the night time and intentionally destroyed the Buddha images.
A police in charge of Kyauk Taw township confirmed that the incident took place at Thet Taw Shay pagoda on the night of Warso religious full moon day.
“I am now arriving in the pagoda to investigate the matter. As the investigation is going on I cannot say any facts about the incident at this moment,” said the police officer while responding to Narinajra News.
The Army and police personnel have already reconstructed the damaged Buddha images. Of course, the villagers continue insisting on strict punishments to the guilty persons.
