At least for women gave birth still born babies few months back in Kyauk Pru township of western Burma raises the apprehension that they became victims of leakages from a nearby gas based factory in Arakan.

A Burmese Parliamentarian, who has investigated the issue, informed Narinjara News on Friday that the residents of Mala Kyunt village, who witnessed the dead babies, expressed their suspicions on some environmental problem for the disaster.

U Ba Shin, a Parliamentarian from Kyauk Pru township elaborated that the incident took place in November 2013. Terming the happenings as unusual, the villagers suspected the role of trashes discarded by a nearby gas cleaned factory under Shwe Gas project.

“But I am not an expert to comment on the environmental impact on pregnant women. I will definitely inform the concerned authority to examine and find the reality soon,” stated the honourable member of Burma’s lower house of Parliament.

Mentionable is that the affected pregnant women were reportedly working in their farmlands adjacent to a drain connecting a gas cleaned factory that discarded chemical wastes on way to the sea.

“Many villagers suspect that the affected women used to work for longer period in the locality with the bad smell from the factory. Moreover, they used to drink the water from a well adjacent to the drain, which might have contaminated the ground water,” added U Ba Shin.

The villagers also alleged that the factory owner used the drain from early morning hours to 7 am every day. At that time, the acidic smell covers the entire locality. Moreover they witnessed colorful liquid trashes time to time in  the drain which is connected to the Bay of Bengal.

They also alleged that the chemical wastes have already damaged many aquatic animals in the locality.
