Meet the world's first laser weapon, designed by the US Navy to set aircraft and small boats ablaze.

The LaWS, or simply Laser Weapon System, fires a high-powered laser beam capable of setting fires within seconds of focusing on a surface.

Mounted on warships, it is designed to intercept fast moving targets, causing them to burn up or if they are carrying explosives, explode prematurely.

The weapon has completed field tests and is expected to be deployed on board US vessels within months.
