According to a source close to the police department, the accused Muslim residents killed a police officer named Aung Kyaw Thein on January 13, 2014.
Initially the police detained 16 Muslims for the preliminary investigation on the murder case, but 8 of them got released without any lawsuit.
All the accused Muslims were brought and produced in the Maungdaw district court on March 11, where 8 were acquitted by the judge. The other 8 Muslims were charged in the murder case.
On the fateful day of January 13, a police patrol team led by Sergeant Aung Kyaw Thein was attacked by some villagers while the team had arrived in Du Chiyaer Dan Muslim village during the night time. Since the attack, Sergeant Aung Kyaw Thein went on missing with a gun.
The police department got convinced that Sergeant Aung Kyaw Thein was killed by the Muslim villagers, even though his dead body has not been recovered.
Later some foreign NGOs alleged that over 40 Muslim women & children were killed by the security forces with the help of Rakhine Buddhists residents as a revenge of the incident.
However the Burma government led by President U Thein Sein denied the allegation and it constituted a commission to probe in to the entire incident. The commission, through a press conference at MPC on March 10, had declared that it could not find any clue & evidences against the killing of Muslim women & children there.
