US Citizen and Arakanese National Arrested in Malaysia

Dhaka: US citizen and Arakanese national Nyi Nyi Lwin was arrested by Malaysian police on 27 March in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, reports an Arakanese community source.

Ko Khaing Chan Min from Kuala Lumpur said, "He was arrested by police in an Arakanese refugee office in Kuala Lumpur on the evening of 27 March. The reason behind his arrest is reportedly related to his US passport, as his passport date is expired."

Nyi Nyi Lwin was also in charge of foreign affairs in the Arakan National Council that was formed by several Arakanese political groups fighting for democracy and self-determination in Burma.

"He is not only a member of the ANC but is also working for Arakanese refugees in Malaysia. We have not received any more information about his condition since his arrest. The police seized his telephone and cut his communication with the outside," Ko Khaing said.

Nyi Nyi Lwin has been staying in Malaysia on his US passport for many years for political purposes. No one can confirm details about why he was arrested, but there are many rumors.

Nyi Nyi Lwin is from Ponna Kyunt originally, a small town in Sittwe District in Arakan State. He left for the US from the Thai-Burma border as a refugee after the '88 uprising in Burma.

Mrauk-U is located in northern Rakhine State, around 60 km from the state capital of Sittwe. The ancient city was the seat of Arakanese kings from the 1400s until the late 1700s. At the height of their power, they controlled an area covering large parts of eastern Bengal, modern-day Rakhine State and the western part of central Myanmar. Much of the city’s remains are well-preserved and some 380 historic temples are scattered between the lush hills of northern Rakhine. Mrauk-U Heritage Trust chairwoman Daw Khin Than told The Irrawaddy on Tue...
