Leaders of Alleged Taliban Group Under Serious Interrogation

Maungdaw: Eight leaders who were arrested recently along with others in northern Maungdaw in Burma's Arakan State, reportedly on suspicion of having connections to the Taliban, have been under serious interrogation by Burmese border security forces at Nasaka headquarters.

The arrested leaders were identified as Abu Kalam, son of Abdul Karim, Ex-VPDC Chairman U Zaw Win, alias Kalu, son of Mohammed Shafi, Ziaul Haque, son of Mokkul Hossain, Moulivi Forid, Sirazul Haque, son of Ashraf Zamal, Salim, son of Golam Subhan, Abdul Zalil, son of Azim Uddin, and Dil Mohhamed. One of the men was reportedly killed during interrogations by Nasaka officials.

"Eight detainees who are regarded as leaders of the group are now under serious interrogation by Nasaka officials, and I have heard that Moulivi Forid, one of the eight, was killed, while another man is near death after Nasaka severely tortured them during interrogation," said the source.

"Moulivi Forid is said to have been killed on 20 March," the source said, but Narinjara has been unable to obtain separate confirmation of the man's death.

Speaking to Narinjara, a local resident said the situation is still unstable in the area and some villagers from the area are fleeing in fear of being arrested by Nasaka.

"The situation is still unstable, especially in the Kha Mong Seik Village Tract where the problem started. Most of the villagers are fleeing to hide and some have already fled to Bangladesh in fear of arrest by Nasaka. The residents from other parts of Maungdaw do not dare to travel to the area as the arrests are continuing there," said the resident.

According to the Nasaka source, nearly 100 local Muslims have been arrested so far by Nasaka forces in northern Maungdaw after a leader of the alleged group was arrested on 4 March and a seal and documents were seized that implicated a connection with the Taliban.

At the height of their power, they controlled an area covering large parts of eastern Bengal, modern-day Rakhine State and the western part of central Myanmar. Much of the city’s remains are well-preserved and some 380 historic temples are scattered between the lush hills of northern Rakhine.
