Maungdaw: The Burmese army has been constructing a new motor road on the western Burmese border since November, 2010, but has not declared what the purpose of the road is, said local villagers in the area.
The road is being constructed by the Burmese army on the proposed track of the Bangladesh - Burma friendship road that was mapped out by the Burmese authority when planning began on the friendship road.
A village chairman said that the army has constructed road between Kyin Chaung and Gupi located in northern Maungdaw Township on the western Burmese border. The road construction is under the supervision of Lieutenant Colonel Myint Oo.
According to a source, the recent construction of the Kyint Chaung - Gupi road is located along the Taung Bro - Buthidaung road track that was proposed as the friendship road to connect with the Sittwe - Rangoon highway via Kyauktaw.
The authority has also constructed a road between Buthidaung on the upper Mayu River and Kyauktaw on the upper Kaladan River.
The proposed friendship road between Bangladesh and Burma is to be connected from Taung Bro, opposite the Bangladesh town Okia, to Kyuaktaw, where the Sittwe - Rangoon highway crosses the town.
The friendship road between Bangladesh and Burma is bypassing the Arakan State capital Sittwe. The track of the friendship road is from Taung Bro - Kuain Cuan - Buthidaung to Kyauktaw.
The Burmese army is now preparing to build a bridge near Kyin Chaung, however, the authority authority has not announced why they are building the road.
An analyst in the border area said that if the construction is for the friendship road, the army would not need to be involved, as some companies would be able to build the road, adding that, "It is for the army, not for other purposes."
