A village authority on the western Burmese border imposed finds on two villagers who voted for the National Democracy Party for Development, or NDPD, and not for the government-backed USDP during the election, report local villager sources.
On 23 November two villagers - 26-year-old Iliyet and 25-year-old Jamal - were fined by village chairman Ahsar Mad of Taungbro Sub-Township in Maungdaw Township. Each youth was fined 150,000 kyat by the village chairman.
A relative of the youth said the chairman arrested them with the help of the local police force because the youths voted for the NDPD against the chairman's directive. The chairman directed all villagers to vote for the government-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party in the election.
Another villager is currently hiding from authorities at present out of fear of arrest, the relative said.
During the election held on 7 November, 2010, seven villagers in Taungbro Left Village voted for the NDPD against the USDP. All the voters are now facing punishment from the authority for their votes.
In Taungbro Left Village, there were 1,060 voters in the election. Among them, most voted for the USDP and just seven cast votes for the NDPD. Five voted for the National Unity Party, the successor to the socialist party led by former dictator General Ne Win.
The NDPD lost in the election in Maungdaw Township but won two seats in Buthidaung Township in the State Parliament, despite the many pressures against the people by authorities to vote for the USDP.
