Officials in Indian Kashmir say a young man has been killed during a violent protest, the 13th death to occur during weeks of demonstrations by anti-India Muslim separatists.

A police source told reporters the man, Fayaz Ahmed, was killed Tuesday when police opened fire to disperse a demonstration in the main city of Srinagar.

An official spokesman for the security forces denied the officers shot at the crowd, which was chanting "we want freedom" and throwing stones at police.

Hundreds of people had gathered in the Tengpora district of Srinagar to protest the disappearance of another demonstrator a day earlier.

The demonstrators say police killed the missing boy, 17-year-old Mufazzr Bhat, but the Associated Press reports police say he drowned accidentally in a stream.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan.  Muslim insurgents in Indian Kashmir have been fighting for independence from India or a merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan for more than 20 years.

The two nuclear-armed neighbors have fought two wars over the Himalayan region.

Much of the city’s remains are well-preserved and some 380 historic temples are scattered between the lush hills of northern Rakhine.
