17 Burmese labourers sentenced to long term imprisonment
(Narinjara, 7 September 2014)
The chief judge of Ann township court in Arakan on Friday sentenced 17 Burmese labourers to long term imprisonment as they were found guilty in setting a Chinese workers’ house on fire. The Chinese workers are engaged with the oil pipeline work at Taung Sauk locality of Arakan.
The Ann township police chief informed that 3 labourers were sentenced to behind bars for 10 years and the rest to 6 years’ imprisonment by the court. They were punished under section no 436 for the case of arson, section no 452 for trespassers and section no 427 for destroying other’s properties, the police chief added.
The convicted 17 labourers were arrested by the police on 26 January last after they clashed with the Chinese workers at the factory site in Taung Sauk village under Ann township. The quarrel started after the Chinese workers allegedly threw water over the Burmese labourers when they were sleeping at the downstairs.
Following the quarrel and clash, some Burmese labourers ablazed a building where Chinese workers were staying.
Now the lawyers for Burmese labourers are preparing to appeal at the Kyauk Pru district court as they were not satisfied with the verdict of Ann township court.
U Myo Myat Hein, a lawyer for the convicted Burmese workers, while speaking to Narinjara over phone claimed that the township court verdict was unfair. Hence they would approach the higher court very soon, he added.
