Scholarship Description: Two
types of grants will be available: Language Training Grant and
Postgraduate Study Grant. The language training grant supports the study
of a foreign Southeast Asian national or local language through a
non-degree course with a tutor duly accredited by a university or a
recognized language training institute in the region. The purpose of the
grant is to equip Southeast Asian graduate students with proficiency in
a Southeast Asian (national or local) language other than their own for
individual research. Postgraduate Study Grant: The grant aims to
encourage the study of a Southeast Asian country other than one’s own or
a comparative study across the region by MA or PhD graduate students
and postdoctoral researchers.

Duration of award(s): The grant will support language training up to six months during the one-year grant period beginning 1 April 2015.
What does it cover?
The Language Training Grant covers accommodation and living expenses, foreign travel, and tutor’s fee. The maximum amounts for grant expenses are as follows:
-Masters Degree: Accommodation and Living Expenses: $350 per month; Foreign Travel: Actual cost; Tutor’s Fee: $250 per month
-PhD Degree: Accommodation and Living Expenses: $400 per month; Foreign Travel: Actual cost; Tutor’s Fee: $250 per month
Postgraduate Study Grant covers research and accommodation and living expenses. The maximum amounts for grant expenses are as follows:
-Masters Degree: Accommodation and Living Expenses: $350 per month; Maximum Grant: $5,000
-PhD Degree: Accommodation and Living Expenses: $400 per month; Maximum Grant: $7,000
-Postdoctoral: Accommodation and Living Expenses: $400 per month; Maximum Grant: $10,000
Selection Criteria: For Language Training Grant, the Selection Committee values applications that demonstrate the necessity of the language for research. For Postgraduate Study Grant, The Selection Committee values proposals that further the development of Southeast Asian studies either through comparative study or the study of a country other than one’s own and promote mutual understanding in the region. The Committee also considers the originality of the proposal, its methodological soundness, the applicant’s motivation in pursuing research, and the over-all organization and coherence of the proposal.
Notification: Applications will be evaluated by the SEASREP Selection Committee and grants will be approved by the SEASREP Board of Trustees in February 2015. Applicants will be notified of the decision on their applications in March 2015.
