Six people including a senior official were killed yesterday in two separate insurgent attacks in Pattani.
Hami Uma, deputy head of a local administrative body in Mayo district, was killed instantly along with driver Doraseh Jehlong after a pickup truck cut in front of their vehicle and four gunmen in the truck bed sprayed them with more than 100 rounds from M16 and AK47 assault rifles.Stray bullets hit and killed passerby Saifoo Phayain and grazed a 13yearold student.
The gunfire shattered windows at a nearby school and struck the roofs of three homes. More than 100 spent casings and spikes scattered by the gunmen to prevent pursuit were found at the scene, a Tintersection.
The four gunmen, along with the driver and a passenger in the cab, were travelling in a black Mitsubishi Titan pickup without licence plates, police said.
Later in Panareh district, four gunmen on two motorcycles arrived at a seafoodprocessing business owned by married couple Atikorn and Urai Ungrangsee and adult relative Sunee, and opened fire, killing all of them instantly. The attackers travelled on two black Honda Wave motorcycles.
Before leaving, the four planted a bomb near one of the shop's doors. The device was detected visually by a police bomb squad, which defused and disposed of it.
