Arakanese in Rangoon Under Surveillance After Bomb Blast

Burmese military authorities have put Arakanese living in the former capital Rangoon under surveillance after a suspect in a recent bomb blast was identified as ethnic Arakanese.

The alleged bomber is 26-year-old Zaw Min Than, according to his national ID card, and he hails from Rambree Township in southwestern Arakan State.

He is believed to have been carrying the bomb when it accidentally exploded as he was buying betel nut from a stall near the Yan Aung Zeya Bridge in Inn Sein Township in northern Rangoon.

Arakanese residents told Narinjara that authorities have searched and kept a close watch on their homes and monasteries in the area near the explosion and around Rangoon since the incident occurred.

"Authorities have inspected our monastery and interrogated our guests from Arakan, who are staying here for medical purposes, since the bomb blast. For long we have not needed to report our guests to the authorities, now we are asked to report our guests to them daily," said an Arakanese monk from Danyawaddy Monastery in Inn Sein Township.

An Arakanese youth living in Rangoon said, "Not only in Inn Sein Township, but also Arakanese residences in North Okkalapa, Hlaing Thar Yar, Kyauk Myaung, and Gwatta Leik Townships have been searched and inspected by the authorities."

Eight people, including the alleged bomber, were injured in the blast. According tot he regime's newspaper, the victims were identified as 21-year-old Tun Tun, 25-year-old Ma Thin Thin, 3-year-old Ma Nyein Tun, 13-year-old Zaw Min Htike, 27-year-old Tint Lwin Oo, 22-year-old Kay Thi Myo Kyaw, and 31-year-old Wai Pa Pa Swe.

Alleged bomber Zaw Min Than is currently undergoing emergency medical treatment and in is critical condition at Rangoon hospital. The newspaper also reported that some explosives, including one cartridge, were found at Zaw Min Than's residence.
