He said, "The road is now collapsed after heavy rain and landslides. Vehicles are unable to travel on the road. At least three bridges on the road collapsed last night."
The road connects Buthidaung and Maungdaw on the western Burmese border, and is the only overland road connecting Bangladesh to Burma.
"The road is key to trade with Bangladesh and now the transportation is totally stopped," the source said.
The motor road is very important in connecting with Bangladesh, but the authority has neglected road repairs. Because of this, the road often suffers collapse and blockages during the rainy season.
The road was also blocked in June this year due to a bridge collapsing after heavy rain. At that time, transportation between Bangladesh and Burma was stopped for at least a month and border trade suffered.
This is the second time the 16-mile long motor road has been damaged by heavy rain during this rainy season.
