Maungdaw: Nasaka forces punished a Muslim youth for showing his membership card of the Union Solidarity Development Party as ID when he traveled yesterday from Buthidaung to Maungdaw in western Burma's Arakan State.
A witness told Narinjara that they youth was slapped and made to stand in the sun until sunset, and was fined 3,000 kyat by the border guard personnel at the 3-mile checkpoint on the Buthidaung-Maungdaw road.
"The youth seemed quite confident with his USDP membership card, and no sooner did he show his USDP card than he was slapped with the remark, 'What do you think of Nasaka?', and detained at the checkpoint," said the witness.
"He was later released after being made to stand in the sun until sunset and being fined 3,000 kyat by Nasaka personnel at the checkpoint," the source added.
The youth was identified as 25-year-old Zakir, from Buthidaung. He was reportedly traveling to Maungdaw on personal business.
The source said that Muslims have to use their temporary white ID cards, which declare on the back, "by this card the bearer cannot claim citizenship of any country", when traveling locally.
According to local residents, the USDP, which is the proxy party of the current Burmese regime, is gaining wider support among the Muslim communities in Buthidaung and Maungdaw Townships as it intensifies its voter campaigns. The party is wooing Muslims with promises of citizenship and development schemes, and is threatening that the party will not care for those who do not join or support it after the elections scheduled on November 7.
