1 Killed and 3 Injured in Robbery in Hindu Village in Western Burma

Maungdaw: One person was killed and another three were seriously injured by armed robbers to looted cash and jewelry from a goldsmith's house on Monday night in Maungdaw on the western Burmese border, said a police officer.

"One Hindu youth, who tried to defend himself, was killed when the robbers opened fire, and another three were wounded during the robbery of a goldsmith's house in a Hindu village in Maungdaw Township," he said.

About 15 bandits with guns entered the Hindu village, located at four mile ward outside Maungdaw Town, at midnight, impersonating Nasaka officials to perpetrate the robbery.

The bandits tied up four village sentries with roped when they reached the entrance gates of the village. They then forced the sentries to show them the goldsmith U Ni Maung's house. A nephew of U Ni Maung attempted to defend himself during the course of the robbery, and the culprits opened fire and shot the youth to death, the police source added.

The robbers also beat up many people in the village, injuring three villagers who tried to resist before they fled the village with their loot. Among those injured are one village who had his eye gouged, and another who had his hand broken.

The deceased victim and wounded were sent to Maungdaw hospital soon after the incident.

On the western Burmese border, there are a number of law enforcement agencies to maintain security, but robberies continue to take place. Because of this, people in the border area are now living in a state of insecurity.
