BGB chief scheduled to visit Burma next week

The top officials of Bangladesh border forces are expected to visit Burma (Myanmar) next week.

Bangladesh foreign minister  AH Mahmood Ali on Sunday informed the media that Border Guard Bangladesh(BGB) director general Aziz Ahmed with a high level delegation is leaving for the neighboring country on June 9 to discuss various border related issues with his counterpart there.

The minister, soon after a function held at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in Dhaka informed the scheduled departure of the border guard  director general adding, “We will do whatever (it) is needed.”

For some time, the border between Bangladesh and Burma remained tense following the some clashes between the personnel belonged to the BGB and Burma border security forces. Even a BGB member  named Nayek Mizanur Rahman was killed following a clash with the Burma border security forces few days back.

The incident prompted both the countries to engage more security forces in the border areas in addition to the regular forces.

The Bangladesh government in Dhaka even summoned the Burmese Ambassador Myo Myint Than twice since May 28 and handed over a protest note against the unprovoked gunfire by the Burma border security forces along the international border areas.

The Burmese forces on Saturday handed over the body of Nayek Mizanur Rahman, who was killed  at Maungdaw frontier of Burma on last Wednesday to the Bangladesh authority.

The situation in the border areas slowly cooled down.

“The situation has improved a lot after the tension actually cooled down in the localities ,”  claimed Bangladesh foreign minister Ali. He also added that the border forces of both the countries started their regular activities now.

The minister also informed that a daylong foreign office consultations between Bangladesh and Burma have also been arranged in Dhaka on  June 18 to discuss all relevant issues in a comprehensive manner.
