Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday called on the government to reallocate funds earmarked for populist policies in order to finance the flood recovery.
"Before thinking about borrowing foreign loans, the government should curb unnecessary spendings such as the first car policy," he said.Abhitsit was reacting to news reports that the government might rely on foreign loans to rebuild the flood-hit areas and businesses.
He also urged the National Flood Relief Centre to be more careful in alerting the public about run-off.
"Facts should be checked before warning in order to avoid panic from false alarm," he said.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Science Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi had good intent but might have used the wrong words to warn Bangkok residents, resulting in panic.
Yingluck promised to finetune the future work of the centre to prevent causing confusion.
