Pathum Thani and Ayutthaya focusing on recovery efforts

The repair of leaked dyke at Ban Phrao sluice gate is expected to complete by today, Pathum Thani Administrative Organisation president Chan Phuangphet said on Friday.

The remaining work is to fix the final 20 meters of the dyke, he said.

The dyke is a critial barrier to guard Rangsit and northern Bangkok from inundation.

On Thursday's night, Science Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi triggered panic after he warned residents from Khlong Luang and Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus to prepare for evacuation if the sluice gate broke down.

Later the National Flood Relief Centre said Plodprasop made his personal assessment of the situation with good faith but the centre did not issue an evacuation order.

In Ayutthaya, 1st Army Region commander Lt General Udomdet Sitabutr cancelled a plan to mobilise Chinook helicopters to transport empty containers for in an effort to recover the inundated Hi-Tech Industrial Park at Bang Pa-in district.

The inundation is about one meter, hence the water is too deep and too strong to deploy helicopters for any recovery operations, he said, following an inspection of the scene.
He said soldiers would have to wait for the torrent to settle before starting the recovery of the industrial estate.

The key to recovery is to dump rocks to form a temporary dyke to slow down the water before pumping the water out of the industrial estate.
