Wall St ends lower

The Dow Jones Industrial Average 40.72 points, or 0.35 per cent lower at 11,478.13. The S&P 500 fell 3.59 points, or 0.30 per cent at 1,203.66, while the Nasdaq gained 15.51 points, or 0.60 per cent at 2,620.24

Among the key S&P sectors, financials lagged, while technology shares were higher
Gold prices closed at USD 1,661.50 an ounce, while crude oil settled at USD 84.01 a barrel.

Ban Phrao sluice gate repair to be done Friday

The repair of leaked dyke at Ban Phrao sluice gate is expected to complete by today, Pathum Thani Administrative Organisation president Chan Phuangphet said on Friday.

The remaining work is to fix the final 20 meters of the dyke, he said.

The dyke is a critial barrier to guard Rangsit and northern Bangkok from inundation.

Thai composite stocks index (SET) opened on Friday flat at 936.44. down 0.38 point, or 0.04 per cent.

Blue chip SET-50 index was at 657.71, down 0.46 point, or 0.07 per cent.

Top five active (value) stocks: PTT, BBL, JAS, BANPU, CPF.

Populist spendings should be curbed in face of flood recovery

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday called on the government to reallocate funds earmarked for populist policies in order to finance the flood recovery.

"Before thinking about borrowing foreign loans, the government should curb unnecessary spendings such as the first car policy," he said.

Abhitsit was reacting to news reports that the government might rely on foreign loans to rebuild the flood-hit areas and businesses.

He also urged the National Flood Relief Centre to be more careful in alerting the public about run-off.

The Irrawaddy YANGON—Myanmar’s Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture submitted the final draft of its nomination for Mrauk-U to become a World Heritage Site to UNESCO on Monday, four months after the ministry submitted the first draft of its nomination in September 2019.
