Maungdaw: A Muslim youth was arrested on Thursday after a motorbike accident with Nasaka officers in Maungdaw in western Burma's Arakan State.
A witness who wished to remain anonymous told Narinjara that the youth was arrested after his bike collided with another speeding bike driven by Nasaka officers at a junction near the three-mile Nasaka checkpoint on the Buthidaung - Maungdaw road.
"Actually the officers̢۪ speedy bike seemed to lose control and collided into the youth's bike around 4:00 pm at the junction of the Maungdaw - Buthidaung and Kyinkanyin - Maungdaw roads, not far from the three-mile Nasaka checkpoint. The youth was on the right side of the traffic way," said the witness.
The source was unable to identify either the youth or the officers involved in the accident, and did not notice the number plates on either bike. However, they said the youth's motorcycle was an Indian-made model made for highway driving while the officers' was a Chinese-made scooter. The Nasaka officer who was driving the scooter sustained serious head injuries while the youth and second officer received minor injuries to their hands and legs in the accident.
The added that the youth was detained along with his bike by Nasaka personnel from the three-mile checkpoint station.
A Nasaka source at the checkpoint station confirmed the accident occurred and identified the injured officer who was driving as Major Thurin Zaw, the zone commander of Nasaka Area No. 7 in Maungdaw. He is now hospitalized at the Maungdaw government hospital. The second officer was identified as Major Kyaw Aung, the zone commander of Nasaka Area No. 6.
The officers were reportedly traveling from Kyikanpyin Nasaka Headquarters to the three-mile checkpoint for an official emergency. The Nasaka source declined to give any information about the youth being detained at the checkpoint station.
"To concern with the Nasaka here is as dangerous as finding lice on a wild tiger's head. Surely, the youth will be charged with either large remunerations or punished with a jail sentence after they claim he is at fault for the officer's injuries," the anonymous witness said.
