China's ambassador to Bangladesh, Zhang Xianyi, made the comment about Burma's agreement when he met with Bangladesh Forest and Environment Minister Hasan Mahmud in Dhaka on Monday.
"China has confirmed [Burma's] assent on plans to connect Kunming with Chittagong by road, via [Burma]," said Minister Hasan Mahmud, adding that, "[Burma] had not shown any interest on a similar Bangladesh proposal, but agreed when China arrived on the scene."
Burma's agreement on the tri-nation road links has come about soon after the head of the military's recent visit to China.
Analysts had predicted that Burma's military chief, Senior General Than Shwe, was likely to agree to the tri-nation road plan with China during his visit to China from 7 - 11 September.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, during her visit to Beijing in March this year, had sought Chinese help in the construction of the road links and deep seaport in Bangladesh.
The proposed road and rail links between Bangladesh and China via Burma were also discussed by the visiting Governor of Yunnan Province Qin Guangrong, and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister's office in Dhaka on 5 September.
Bangladesh has been approaching the Burmese military government about constructing the tri-nation road and rail links from Bangladesh to China for decades.
Burma has expressed a willingness to construct the road links but has yet to implement any part of the plan. Because of this, Bangladesh has sought China's help to pressure Burma to implement the road and rail link projects.
