Large numbers of Arakanese in the USA have recently joined the World Arakanese Organization, strengthening the role of the organization among the Arakanese Diaspora.
A number of politicians, scholars, businessmen, and students, as well as many Arakanese women have become members of the WAO, USA branch.
"There are not only men but also a number of women in the USA branch of the WAO," said a member speaking over telephone with Narinjara.
According to a WAO press release on July 23, many women have been elected as In-Charge and Deputy In-Charge of many departments in the USA branch.
Further, the committee of the USA branch of the WAO was reformed during a conference held in the USA for Arakanese living in the country on July 15.
In the reformation of the WAO USA Branch, Ko Mg Mg Lay and Ko Sein Htawn were elected as the branch President and Vice-President respectively. Ko Myint Mg Htay was elected General Secretary while Ko Kyaw Htoo Aung and Ko Hla Kyi were elected Joint Secretaries. Ma Ei Thwe Hlaing became Treasurer with Ko Kyaw Soe and Ko Mra Htawn as Joint Treasurers. Ko Htawn Kyaw will be In-Charge of Foreign Affairs and Ko Hla Kyi is to be Deputy In-Charge of Foreign Affairs.
Ma Phru Phru Sann is to be Head of Women’s Affairs with Ma Nwe Nwe Oo, Ma Hta Hta Phru, Ma Swe Swe Oo, Ma Khine Khine Oo, Ma May Than Yee, Ma Ne Ne Lwon, Ma Ei Thwey Hlaing and Ma Kha Kha Wai as members of Women’s Affairs.
The WAO was first formed by a group of Arakanese in Japan in 2004 to promote the standing of the Arakanese community in all sectors, including business, education, society and culture.
A few WAO branches have already been formed and currently operate in European countries, USA, Australia, Malaysia, Japan, and Thailand.
In the USA branch, there are about 50 Arakanese who will become members of the Central Committee.
