Sittwe: At least seven youths have been arrested so far in the Arakan State capital Sittwe after a riot police officer was murdered in a ward of city, said a family member of an arrested youth and a police source.
The youth arrested on suspicion of murder were identified as Tun Lun Soe, San Mya Kyaw, Sein Chay, Yu Pi Ra, along with another three unnamed youths from Set Ron Su Ward in Sittwe.
The riot police officer, Corporal Win Tun, was murdered by an unknown assailants during Thingyan (happy new year) , presumed to be local residents, at Plot No. 6 in Set Ron Suu Ward at midnight on Wednesday.
An official from Sittwe hospital confirmed that the body of a riot police officer was sent in by police early in the morning on Thursday for an autopsy. It is believed he was beaten with something heavy, possibly an iron chain.
The police authorities have severely interrogated the youths, a family member reported. The reason behind the murder is still unknown.
Western Command Commander General Thaung Aye, who was in Sittwe at the time of the murder to attend the water festival, has instructed police to disclose the details of the case immediately. Afterward, the commander left for Mrauk U from Sittwe, a source said.
