Offering of Thin-bok Swoon a Rakhine Buddhist Festival Myanmar is a land of festivals which are usually connected with Buddhism, but although they are religious occasions there is also colourful dancing, lively music and songs. Often there are processions where the local people dress up in all their finest clothes and go to a pagoda to make offerings. Not only the Bama (Burmese) people but other ethnic groups like Mons and Shans and also Rakhines (Arakanese) who are really of the main Bama stock speaking a different dialect, all have festivals, some being purely local and only seen at specific places. Syrian Islamists set sight on Myanmar

Syrian Islamist have been attempting to smuggle Muslim extremists into Myanmar, a Syrian Islamist source told NOW. According to the source, “many attempts have been made to send Jihadists to Myanmar for the sake of our brothers.” “Contacts with Islamist groups in Pakistan, India and other surrounding countries are being made in order to facilitate their entry into Myanmar.” The source, however, added that “these attempts have failed.” Speaking to NOW, Salafist Sheikh Bilal al-Masri called on Muslims to attack Buddhists and their interests. “I decree that every person who can get to a Buddhist should kill him because they are killing our people and the Muslims cannot be blamed for their reaction.” The Sheikh went on to say that there was “a systematic war” against Muslims in Mali, Iraq, Palestine and Myanmar. “All this can trigger extremism, and then they will say that we are the terror

Myanmar and Bangladesh to cooperate on border security

The ceremony to mark for flag meeting between Myanmar and Bangladesh on June 6 at Maungdaw (Photo-Aung Ye Ko) Myanmar and Bangladesh have agreed to cooperate to enforce border security and prevent conflict in areas between the two countries, according to a joint press release. Delegations led by Police Major General Zaw Win from the Myanmar Police Force and Major General Aziz Ahmed, head of Border Guards Bangladesh, met in Nay Pyi Taw from June 10 to 12 to discuss border security and enforcing the rule of law in border areas. In a press release the Bangladesh government said that they will not allow convicted persons or illegal armed groups to use their territory. They will also investigate ongoing problems regarding border security and inform Myanmar of further action.  Both sides agreed to forge more cooperation between border security forces to combat illegal armed groups, criminals and insurgent groups operating along the border. ANP calls efforts to introduce PR system dishonest

The leader of the Arakan National Party (ANP) Aye Thar Aung has criticised the recent moves to change Myanmar’s electoral system to one of proportional representation (PR). “At a time when the country should be striving for democracy, some are working to change to another system instead of the present election system which has no problems. This isn’t honest,” he said. Khin Wai Kyi of the National Democratic Force Party submitted a proposal in parliament to introduce a PR system. The proposal was met with objections from military representatives, ethnic parties and the National League for democracy (NLD). But representatives from the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) have seconded the proposal which was approved on June 11. Most criticised the fact that introducing a complex new system at such an early stage of Myanmar’s reforms will only confuse the electorate. Eleven Media CEO to testify for Unity Journal defence

Eleven Media CEO Dr Than Htut Aung will on Tuesday testify as defence witness for four reporters and the head of Unity Journal involving in the alleged chemical weapons factory report. Well-known journalist Po Thauk Kyar is also the other defence witness. The two are scheduled to take the stand at the 14th hearing of the Pakkoku District Court to defend the five charged for violating the Official Secrets Act. The case came to light after the publication of Unity Journal report on No 24 Defence Equipment Factory in Pauk Township, Magway Region. Lt Colonel Kyaw Kyaw Oo, head of the factory’s administration department, filed a complaint against the five at Pauk Township police station. This led the police to detain the five on the first week of February. The trial commenced on February 14. Five Buddhist monks defrocked and remanded for religious offence

The monks are taken to the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee office on Wednesday after a raid on Maha Thandi Thukha Monastery (Photo-EMG)  Five Buddhist monks from Maha Thandi Thukha monastery in Yangon were disrobed and remanded at Insein prison for offending the religious ruling committee, temple followers said. The religious dispute came to the head on Tuesday when police, officials from Religious Affairs Ministry and some 250 monks from Yangon Sangha Nayaka Committee raided and shut down the monastery, run by abbot the venerable Penang Sayadaw. The authorities took some 20 monks into custody.  Sein Maw, the head of Yangon Region Religious Affairs Department, said 15 of 20 detained monks were already released. Telenor confirms Facebook block

Published: 9 Jun 2014 DTAC was ordered to restrict its customers from accessing Facebook on May 28 by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), according to a representative of Telenor Group of Norway, DTAC's major shareholder. Telenor Asia vice-president Tor Odland wrote an e-mail to Aftenposten, a Norwegian newspaper, that the company received a call from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, which has been under the NCPO since the May 22 coup, to temporarily prevent its customers from entering Facebook. The restriction was carried out at 3.35pm, impacting around 10 million DTAC users, according to Mr Odland. He also added that the situation puts Telenor in a conundrum.  Chittagong is just Rakhine's Land Rakhine state, where most Rakhine ethics inhabit is one of the seven states within Myanmar sovereignty. 18 Years Into Kalpana Abduction Investigation lacks conviction Staff Correspondent The reinvestigation report on the abduction of indigenous community leader Kalpana Chakma 18 years ago is likely to be submitted at a Rangamati court tomorrow. Kalpana, the then organising secretary of the Hill Women's Federation, was allegedly kidnapped by some military personnel and local law enforcers from her house in New Lalyaghona of Baghaichhari, Rangamati on June 12, 1996. However, two final reports, one submitted by Rangamati police in 2010 and another by Criminal Investigation Department in 2012, failed to establish any connection to the prime accused of the case -- Lieutenant Ferdous Kaiser Khan of Kojoichhari army camp and Village Defence Party (VDP) men Nurul Haq and Saleh Ahmed. Teacher killed after rape in Bandarban Our Correspondent, Bandarban   A schoolteacher was killed allegedly after gang rape in Ngarheisatong area of Roangchhari upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as U Pru Marma, 24, a teacher at Ananda School run by a non-government organisation (NGO). Officer in-Charge of Roangchari police station Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan quoting locals said, U Pru Marma was killed by the Rohingyas after rape. She had gone 'missing' on Friday at around 9:00am, he added. Locals found her body at 11:30pm at the valley of Ngarheisatong hill of Bangchhari in the upazila. The criminals might have killed her after rape as she bore some injury marks on the body, he added. Locals caught Tara Chang Tanchangya alias Debong Tanchangya, 27, and Musalm, 28, of Bangchhari area of the upazila on suspicion and beat them up.
