KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- City Police have set up a special squad to investigate an attempt to assassinate a Member of Parliament from Myanmar, Dr Aye Maung in Bukit Bintang, last Wednesday.
Kuala Lumpur Acting CID chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa said the special squad, headed by himself, was set up to investigate the case which has elements of political involvement.
Dr Aye Maung is the chairman of the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP) in Myanmar and chairman of a commission set up by the Myanmar government to investigate reports of ethnic riots in Rakhine.
Khairi said the squad was carrying out investigations based on a number of evidence obtained from the 11.30pm incident, including footage from Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) along the path used by Aye Maung together with Arakan League for Democracy Party chairman, Aye Thor Aung, together with two other Myanmar nationals.
"We are also investigating whether the shooting had any links with an incident in Ampang where a Myanmar national was shot dead a day after the incident," he told reporters, here Wednesday.
He said police were also working with the Myanmar embassy here to establish the identity of the two motorcyclists who tried to assassinate two Myanmarese political leaders here.
Khairi said four of the five Myanmar nationals involved in the incident had since returned to their country a day after the incident while the fifth member who holds a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, was still in town.
Last Wednesday, in what was suspected to be an assassination attempt, two Myanmar political party leaders narrowly escaped death when two men on a motorcycle fired several shots at their direction (car) in Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang.
The five had just left Plaza Low Yat when the shots were fired.
